Fibroids and Your Life

Leiomyomas, better known as fibroid tumors, are benign, non cancerous tumors that occur in the uterus. According to the American College of Ob/Gyns, approximately 25% of non Hispanic white women and 50% of African-American women suffer from these tumors. They can be asymptomatic or cause life changing symptoms of bleeding, pain, and sometimes life threatening anemia. Fibroids are the reason for nearly 39% of all hysterectomies in the United States.

Dr. Nicole Williams of the Gynecology Institute of Chicago specializes in treating these tumors and recently returned from a trip to Africa treating tumors at times the size of grapefruits! See the above photo for an example.

Fortunately with the advanced technology of Minimally Invasive Gynecology including the Accessa procedure, we can treat your fibroid tumors with techniques that only involve small (and sometimes NO) incisions!

Symptoms of Fibroids include:

Fatigue

Shortness of Breath

Heavy Periods

Pelvic Pressure

Protruding abdominal mass

Treatments for Fibroids include:

Myomectomy

Accessa Procedure

Hysterectomy

Hysteroscopic Resection (entering the uterus through the vagina)

Endometrial Ablation

Each of these treatments is individually discussed and will be tailored to your case after specialized testing which can include Ultrasound, biopsy, and/or MRI. If you have any of these symptoms, don't suffer any longer!
